CS371p Fall 2021: Week 12

What did you do this past week?

This past week, I did a few coding challenges for my internship applications and worked on my Compilers project due soon. I also went to the OOP lectures for this week.

What’s in your way?

I have the Darwin project due Monday and a Compilers project due Tuesday, so I’m cramming pretty hard currently. I also have some interviews coming up soon, and I’m having trouble carving out time to practice for those.

What will you do next week?

Next week, I hope to submit my OOP and Compilers project, as well as submit my Algo assignment. I also have a few IM games to play in and some job interviews, so it will be a busy week. Looking forward to Thanksgiving break!

If you read it, what did you think of the Paper #12: More Getters and Setters?

I read this paper last semester in SWE, but reading it again was a nice refresher on the topic of reducing the use of getters and setters and how to replace them. Lot’s of the content of the paper seemed to be at a high-level, so I’ll be interested to see how I can apply these concepts to my own code.

What was your experience of initializations, copy constructor, copy assignment, move constructor, and move assignment? (this question will vary, week to week)

These topics were a little hard for me to grasp, and I can feel the intensity of the class picking up. I definitely need to take time outside of class to review these topics, as each lecture builds on the last.

What made you happy this week?

I won my IM playoff soccer game today, so my team will be advancing to semi-finals. IM soccer has been super fun this semester, and it’s been nice playing soccer again after a few years. Heading out to the IM fields is a nice break from school work, and I look forward to my games during the week.

What’s your pick-of-the-week or tip-of-the-week?

I’m a month late to this, but on October 18, Apple released the new 2021 Macbook Pros. I waited months for this launch, and was so pumped that it finally came. The new Macbooks have all the ports back and MagSafe charging, and the base model is now a 14 inch screen. The starting prices are pretty steep, but I think this may be a worthy investment, as the new Apple M1 processing chips have been proven to be quite powerful.
